CHAMPAIGN – It's a gentle life that can have the strongest impact.

Winifred Ruth Anderson, who died Thursday (Aug. 17, 2017), was born in Peoria on Dec. 8, 1930, the first of the four daughters of Ernst and Ruth (Billerbeck) Knapp. She graduated from Woodruff High School in 1948 and was employed by both the Bergner's Tea Room and a local bank.

Winnie became a Christian as a teenager and she sought biblical wisdom and strength in every aspect of the rest of her life. To be near two of her younger sisters, she moved in 1955 to California, where she continued to work in banking.

At a church Bible study in Oakland, she met Jerry Anderson of Santa Barbra, Calif., on a blind date at Travis Air Force Base, where he was serving in the Air Force at that time. Winnie and Jerry were married in Peoria on Aug. 24, 1957.

They made their home in central California, where they raised three sons, Daniel (Kellie), Timothy (Ashleigh) and Jon (Janine.) Winnie was active in the lives of her growing boys and their home church, where she and Jerry served in youth ministries, Bible studies, and had many circles of friends.

She eventually returned to work as a bookkeeper for a Fresno area law firm, from which she retired in 1995.

She was a beloved sister to Nancy (Gary) Sloan, Janet (Chet) Farwell and Marilyn (Ron) Dean and sister-in-law to Claude (Dutch) Anderson, Pauline (Bud) Kelsey, Jean (Bud) Lundberg, and Gracie Anderson, and a cherished aunt to 16 nieces and nephews and their children; and she has many cousins in the Peoria area.

Winnie returned to Illinois in 1995 when she and Jerry moved back to the Peoria area to be near their grandchildren. They moved to Champaign in 2008 and attended First Baptist Church in Savoy, Twin City Bible Church and finally Windsor Road Christian Church.

She treasured her grandchildren, Bethany (Tyler) Yager and Chloe Anderson and Charlie, Lucy and Ellie Anderson, and took an active interest in their lives. Winnie was known for her devotion to her home and family, her daily prayers for those in her sphere of influence, her love of the Bible, the iron-core strength of her values, and her humble and gentle spirit. Winnie was a true woman of God.

Winifred Anderson died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 17, 2017) in Champaign, just one week shy of her 60th wedding anniversary with Jerry. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernie and Ruth Knapp; several brothers- and sisters-in-law and one great-niece; as well as other tiny souls not met on earth.

She will be missed by her husband, Jerry Anderson; her three sons and daughters-in-law; five grandchildren; three sisters and one sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 at Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin. We will celebrate Winnie's life at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Windsor Road Christian Church, Champaign. Pastor Randy Boltinghouse will officiate.

"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her ... a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." (Proverbs 31:28 & 30)
