Hancock County Newspaper 23 Oct 1863
"Died at Indianapolis on Thursday, 15 Oct 1863, Lieut. Col. Sol. D. Kempton, of Walpole, Hancock County, aged 34 years. Only a few weeks ago, Col. K. was here (Greenfield) in apparent good health, elastic and buoyant, and with indications of a healthful life. He then vowed his intention of locating in this place and practicing his profession of medicine. We were gratified at the prospect of soon claiming him as a citizen.
"But truly, 'in the midst of life is death.' Col. K. in this life, was guided by a high principle which never shrunk from danger, He was a true friend, a kind neighbor, a genial companion. His body had returned to mother earth ye let not, "The good be interred with the bones." He sacrificed the comforts of home and a lucrative practice to fight for his country's honor and the unity of the States. During his last illness, he declared his faith in the Christian system, and received its consolations, and we may well trust that his disembodies spirit, though it has passed away from earth, has found a happy and eternal home amid brighter climes."
