Around the middle of the sixth century, Turibius and five companions took up the Benedictine habit and founded the monastery of Liébana, either the second or third oldest Benedictine establishment in Spain, dedicating it to Martin of Tours. Turibius served as the monastery's first abbot. Now referred to as the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, the site became as a noted Benedictine stronghold, and is celebrated as containing the largest piece of the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified.
