Ramp, as he was locally well known, was the son of Joseph Henry Smith and Izora Jones. He was the beloved husband of Virginia Davis Smith who was born Feb. 6, 1904 and passed away April 12, 1985. He was the father of William Ramp Smith Jr., born in 1924; Joseph J. Smith who was born Oct. 25, 1926 and died of cancer March 19, 2001; Norma V. Smith Reaves who was born in 1928 and died of cancer in 1984; and Merle "Chook" Smith-Lea who was born in 1930; Celia Smith Medford; Thomas L. Smith; C. Henry Smith; L.D. Smith; Marlon Hardin Smith; Bobby Ray Smith, Sr., and Ronald Davis Smith. His wife's parents were Thomas H. Davis who was born in 1873 and Willie Davis who was born in 1891. Her siblings were Theron Davis born in 1910; Marion S. Davis born in 1915; and twin sisters Raven L. Davis and Vernel Davis both born in 1918. He passed away at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital from complications of heart failure. He is deeply missed.
