He was born April 25, 1916, in Gilmer, where he lived all of his life. C.H. was a graduate of Gilmer High School and attended East Texas State University in Commerce. He began substituting on a city route and clerking for the U.S. Postal Service on Jan. 1, 1938, and retired from there Dec. 31, 1980, as a Rural Carrier. His policy through the years was to be kind to everyone, especially children, and he frequently remembered the children on his route with candy and bubble gum.
On June 26, 1938, he married Gladys Irene Kinel in Marshall. She was a cateress and owner of Kinel's Café in Gilmer and C.H. assisted her there and with lovely functions all over East Texas. Gladys became ill in 1990, and C.H. was devoted to her care at Gilmer Care Center until her death Nov. 2, 1998.
After his retirement from the Gilmer Post Office, he spent his time as a broker at East Texas Realty Co. and on his farm where he grew up. He began serving as a director and secretary-treasurer of the East Texas Telephone Cooperative Board in 1952 and later on the East Texas Communications, L.P. Board until his illness in 2005. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Gilmer, where he served as deacon, usher, greeter and secretary of the Thomas Sunday School Class. Memberships also include National Rural Letter Carriers Association of America, Gilmer Chamber of Commerce. and he was a 32nd Degree Mason in GiImer. He was also a member of the Championship Gilmer Buckeye Football team in the early '30s and was honored in 2005 as being the oldest living member of that team. As his health declined, his niece, Frankie Pittmon, would see that he continued to make it to all the Friday night football games to support the Buckeyes, his alma mater.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Erma Holmes Robinson; wife, Gladys; brothers, Clifford, Fred and Chester Robinson; sisters, Bess Gillespie, Lillie Holland and Dotsy McKinley; niece, Laura McKinley; and great-nephews, Jason Hill and Richard Pittmon. Survivors include nephew and niece-in-law, Eddie and Jo Ellen McKinley; niece and nephew-in-law, Frankie and Jerry Pittmon all of Gilmer; nieces, Margaret Dozier of Sabine, Hollie Shepperd of Tyler, Linda Bryan of Mount Pleasant, Nelda Davidson of Bridgeport, and Marion Robinson of Gilmer; nephews, Gene Robinson and Ray Robinson of Mount Pleasant. He is also survived by numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Roy Helpenstill, Charles Holmes, Don Maines, Kenneth Carroll, Robert Andrews and Doug Fennell. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Davis, Larry Fink, Butch Hobbs, Charles Marsh and George Bickerdike.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the funeral home.
