He fought in the Riel Rebellion of 1885 and, along with Charles Sauve, was sent by the Metis National Committee to bring his brother-in-law Riel's body from Regina, Saskatchewan, home to St. Boniface for burial.
After working as a merchant, he farmed in the RM of St. Vital.
He served as an officer of the Metis National Union, was active in municipal affairs and served as a secretary-treasurer for the St. Vital school district.
Lavallee Avenue and Lavallee School, both in Winnipeg, were named in his honor.
