Adah's parents were: William B. Grable and Lavina P.Conn. She had 4 siblings, Genevieve, Becky, Stella of St. Louis, MO and brother John Conn Grable of Los Angeles, CA [father of Marjorie, Karl and Betty Grable, movie star]
+++
She was one of Betty Grable's aunts and fondly recalled many stories of Betty & Marjorie in their childhood years playing with her children and celebrating Christmas holidays together in St. Louis, MO.
+++
Adah treasured her Irish and Dutch ancestry and much information about them. Adah with her siblings enjoyed visiting their close cousins Nellie McCreary and her family in Rush Tower, MO.
++
Adah met Gene while riding a street car on Grand avenue in St. Louis. Their first date was a tennis match at Tower Grove Park. Soon after their date, Eugene had enlisted in the Army for WWI. Adah and Gene anxiously wrote letters during the war. While stationed in Paris, Gene sent a pale, pearl silk handkerchief with embroidered pink flowers accompanied with a letter asking Adah for her hand in marriage, which she replied, "Yes!" Adah was a beloved and happy wife to Gene Mears and loving and caring mother to her 5 children. She was beautiful and had a shy, quiet nature. Adah also had a whimsical and creative, fun side sharing lots of funny stories. Adah had lived next to a German chef who taught her many delicious recipes and became an excellent cook. Her specialties included almond marzipan cookies, homemade checkerboard cake, roast beef, lamb chops with mint sauce and her famous homemade cinnamon chili sauce. It was told by some of her children that at dinner time, they were each given their plate of food which had a unique painted animal at the bottom to see, when finishing their meal. She was a greatly beloved mother-in-law to June Mears and a very caring grandmother. Her most memorable times were weekend jaunts to the country cabin in St. Clair, MO with her family. She grew blue and purple bearded irises in her rock garden on their property. After her children had grown, she spent many summer vacations with Gene and friends playing cards at their favorite lodge in Minnesota. Christmases were always special when Grandmother Adah & Grandaddy Gene Mears walked in to Jean & Gale Yemm's redwood home in Kirkwood, M0. One can only imagine the magic we all shared as we surrounded a 13 ft. decorated Christmas tree with our family.
