Carl was my basketball coach. He always told us that sportsmanship was more important than winning. And he always took us out for ice cream whether we won or lost. Many years later, we worked together for the county government.

Obituary from The Boulder Monitor 9/6/2017:

Carl DeWayne Purdy, 67, of Colorado Springs, Colorado went home to be with Jesus on August 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by those that he loved.
Carl was born in Grand Junction, Colorado to Willie Carl and Dorothy Jean Purdy, on September 15, 1949. He graduated high school in Bisbee, Arizona in 1967. After graduation, Carl joined the Army and spent 3 years serving his country as a Helicopter Crew Chief. Carl also fought in the Vietnam War. In 1972, Carl married Barbara Jo Neuhart in Lakewood, Colorado. Carl attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, where he graduated with a degree in Special Education. Carl began his teaching career in Egnar, Colorado, then he and Barbara moved to Boulder, Montana where he continued to teach Special Education, Driver’s Education, drive school bus and coach basketball. He also continued his military service in the Montana Army National Guard. During this time, Carl also furthered his education, receiving a degree in Computer Technology. Carl then taught Computer Education at Boulder schools. After retiring from the Boulder, Montana school system, Carl worked as the Network Administrator for Jefferson County in Montana until he retired in 2014 and he and Barbara returned to Colorado, making their home in Colorado Springs.
Carl was very strong in his faith and was active in numerous churches throughout his life. Carl attended Restoration Church in the Fountain Valley at the time of his death.
Carl was an avid fisherman, who loved to tie his own flies. He loved model trains, camping, working in his garden, riding motorcycles, working on computers and watching Denver Broncos football. But above all these things, his greatest joy came from time spent with his family: his children and his grandchildren.
Carl is proceeded in death by his father, Willie Carl Purdy, his mother, Dorothy Jean Purdy and brother Lyman Dwight Purdy.
Carl is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Jo Purdy, daughters Gretchen (Josh) George, and Chelsea (Nathan) Rintamaki, granddaughters Hannah and Chloe George and sisters Mary (Michael) Muller and Donna (Russ) Ogden.
