He married Bettie Plummer in Warrenton, North Carolina, in 1853, the same year he graduated from the University of North Carolina. He engaged in the mercantile business until the Civil War. He joined the 1st North Carolina Cavalry and was quartermaster sergeant. He resumed business in Warrenton, North Carolina, after the war. He moved to Petersburg in 1867, engaging as a commission merchant in tobacco, cotton and peanuts.
