William L. “Bill” Abbott Sr. died peacefully at home on September 7, 2017 at the age of 80.

Bill is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Michael (Angela); daughters Linda Gilley (Brent), Maggie Wills (Mark); daughter-in-law, Julie Abbott; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, sister Coral Jensen (Jim), son, Bill Jr. and granddaughter, Emma.

Bill was born on May 3, 1937 in Helper, UT to Louis William Abbott and Isabell Chindgren (Cima). He attended two years at West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah and then decided to take up truck driving with his Dad, Lou.

Bill enlisted in the Army starting in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1958 at the rank of Sgt. of the 1st Airborne Battalion 187th Infantry Division, Company D. After the Army, Bill drove a truck for the Wycoff Company and after fourteen accidents Bill’s boss saved his life by firing him, which paved the way for his next career.

In 1962, Bill began a 30-year career with the Salt Lake City Police Department and retired as a Sergeant after working in many roles. His most loved days were on the motor squad and working as a Detective in the Dicks Bureau.

Prior to Bill’s retirement, he decided to finish his education and was awarded a GED in 1991.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed working at the Salt Lake City Prosecutor’s office, traveling, and doing a ground-up restoration on a 1951 Willey’s Jeep. Bill was a tough SOB with a big heart and he bonded with others over his love of “all things green” with the beloved members of the Utah Military Vehicle Club. Bill loved his family, his Gang, his neighbors and most of all his cats

A graveside has been scheduled on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park at Camp Williams in Bluffdale, Utah. Salt Lake City Police Chaplain Bill Silver will officiate a short ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bill’s life.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to the Centerville Police Department and South Davis Metro Ambulance and Fire. You guys are true professionals with big hearts.
