Lyman was the sixth of nine children born to Timothy and Emeline (Hunt) Dixon.

A Private in the Standish Guard, a militia unit from Plymouth, the Guard was mustered into service as Company B of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry on April 16, 1861, four days after the opening shots of the Civil War were fired. The regiment was assigned to garrison duty at Fortress Monroe in Hampton, Virginia for three months service, which expired on July 22, 1861. Following their discharge each member of the Regiment was awarded a special bronze "Minuteman of '61" medal by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts which had their name, Company, and Regiment, engraved on the side.

Lyman married Deborah Thomas Harlow, the 20-year-old daughter of John and Jane (Bradford), at Plymouth on Nov. 23, 1864. They were the parents of one child, Martha, who was born July 24, 1865.

Lyman worked in a Plymouth shoe factory and later as a paper hanger. He was a member of the Collingwood Grand Army of the Republic Post 76 in Plymouth.
