Jacob Samuel Ferrin was born in Olean, Cattaraugus Co., New York, the son of Samuel & Olive Fedelia (Kuhn/Coon) Ferrin. He married Janetta on 29 March 1857, in Ogden, Weber Co., Utah. Jacob, his father Samuel, and others of the family moved to Arizona in 1881. Jacob and Samuel "engated in freighting from Buoge to Globe, Arizona".

Jacob was killed by (Chiricahua Apache) Indians while freighting across the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Died at 52 years 1 month 18 days of age.
