Logger Dies in Plunge Over Bank

Raymond L. Chahon, 35-year-old Eureka logger, was killed at a logging operation idled by rain and snow on the Wiggins Ranch above the Big Bend of Mad River yesterday afternoon under what officials said today are puzzling circumstances.

Chahon and a second man, unidentified, were standing on a triangular promintory where two trees previously had been felled when the victim's companion, who had been facing in another direction, said he heard a slight sound. He turned just in time to see Chahon's feet disappear over the edge of a 25-foot drop.

Chahon died instantly, apparently of a broken neck, skull fracture and basal fracture, but the full cause will not be made official until autopsy findings are returned.

Deputy coroner Walter Schocker of Paul's Chapel, Arcata, who went to the scene to retrieve the body, said that he had examined the ground at the spot carefully to determine if a portion of the edge had given way but that there was no sign of such. Chahon possibly could have been leaning against one of the stumps and slipped off, accounting for the vertical head-first plunge, Shocker said, or a heart attack of fainting spell may have been contributory. The victim was seriously injured in another woods accident a year ago, he said.

Coroner W. Lloyd Wallace of Eureka today ordered an autopsy on the victim and stated that he will call an inquest regardless of the outcome.

Chaon's wife, Velma, and three children live at 1328 Gross Street here.

The body was taken to Cooper Mortuary in Eureka where funeral arrangements are pending.
