M T (Dick) Newman was my high school principal at Clements High School located at the Coxey community in Limestone County about 12 miles West of Athens, AL. for most of my years of attendance. He arrived in the 1950's, in the Fall of 1954. He replaced Mr. Hawk, who was principal for only 6 weeks, the summer session, and who left to become principal at T M Rogers in Lauderdale County. Mr. Newman would be the principal at Clements for 14 years until his death in the late Summer of 1968. I was in probably the 3rd grade when I first saw him and thought "this is a big intimidating person". He was a big burly guy, looked kind of like a fleshy Abraham Lincoln. He would prove himself to be an able educator, a student of human nature, and a mainstay in the community.

1966: Johnny Black becomes head basketball coach and Truman Beggs becomes basketball coach at Rogersville, Clements is voted number 1 team in its class in football
1967: Clements wins State basketball tournament in Tuscaloosa

I wish to thank Neal Rose and Jack Batts for adding to Mr. Newman's bio with pictures and details.
