Helen Trowbridge was born on Mar. 9, 1840, in New Haven, Conn. Died in Minonk, Ill., Dec. 18, 1918, aged 78 years, 9 months and 9 days. When a small girl she moved to Louisana with her parents.
While visiting near Bloomington she met Charles J. Van Pelt and they were later married at her home in Franklin, Louisiana in January 1861, the evening before that state seceded from the union. The newly married couple came north on the last boat up the Mississippi river and located in Normal where Mr. Van Pelt was the first Illinois Central agent. One son Isaac Newman Van Pelt of Chicago, was born to them. In 1874, Mr. Van Pelt was transferred to Minonk and this city has since been her home. He was killed by an I. C. train at the depot crossing about twelve years ago.
The deceased was a member of the Episcopalian church, but since coming to Minonk, was an attendant at the Presbyterian church. She received her early education in the East and was a woman that was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her.
Besides the sorrowing son, she leaves one sister, Mrs Lottie Norton, of Cleveland, OH, and one brother, Roswell Trowbridge of Louisiana.
Funeral services will be held at one o'clock Friday afternoon at the late residence conducted by Rev C. W. Donaldson of the Presbyterian church and interment will be made in the Minonk cemetery.
