Samuel E. Higbee Jr., 82, of Groton, husband of Natalie Higbee, died early Wednesday, March 15, 2006 surrounded by his family. He was born in Mystic on October 23, 1923, the son of Samuel E. and Marion E. Bradley Higbee. He attended Mystic Academy and Robert E. Fitch High School graduating with the class of 1941. He worked at EB for a short time before enlisting in the Navy in December of 1942. After basic training in Newport, RI, he did for training at the Aviation Radioman School at NAS Jacksonville, FL. His assignments took him to Pensacola, FL and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He married Natalie Marquardt in Groton on May 14, 1944. He was accepted to Flight Training was sent to Cornell College, MT. Vernon, IA for ground school. While he was there, WWII ended. He was discharged in December of 1945.

He furthered his education in Electronics Engineering and was employed locally at WNLC, Templetone Radio and New London Instrument Company. He returned to EB working as an electronics technician and retired as a Senior Electronics Technician in 1987. After his retirement he worked part time at Carriage House of New London.

His major interests were camping and traveling with his wife in their trailers and motorhomes. Through their participation in tours and private travel they visited Alaska, all of the lower 48 states and many Canadian Provinces and the Canadian Maritimes. He was President and Treasurer of the CT Nutmeg Winnies for many years. He was also a life member of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Dept. #1.

In addition to his wife of over 61 years he is survived by his sister, Lila Hartley of Mystic. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by their son; Stephen Ronald Higbee and his sister, Anna Mae Higbee Dawley.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 18th at 11:30 AM at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, CT. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday evening from 4 to 7 PM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
