John A. Bakewell, 83, of Huron, Ohio, died Sunday morning, March 4, 2007, in the Stein Hospice Care Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born September 13, 1923, in Brownsville, Pa., and was a 1941 graduate of Brownsville High School.

He drove truck for Belford Trucking Company out of Tampa, Florida for many years and always enjoyed trucking. He was also employed as an insurance salesman with Western and Southern Life Insurance Company for 10 years and as a salesman with Foster Chevrolet for three years.

He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, serving under General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. John was a very patriotic man with love for his country and fought hard for his country and our liberties.

He was a good husband and family man. He loved to travel and enjoyed history, boating, cars, hunting, and trap shooting.

Mr. Bakewell was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and attended the Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene in Sandusky. He was a life member of the AMVETS Post 17, VFW Post 2529, and the American Legion Post 83.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis R. Ryan, his parents, John and Mary Ellen (Weiss) Bakewell, and a brother, Harold Bakewell.

Mr. Bakewell is survived by his wife, Norma J. (Horner) Bakewell, whom he married March 21, 1980; five daughters, Mary C. (James Kellem) Bakewell of Sandusky, Robert (Chris) Wiedle of Clyde, Susan G. Bakewell of Vermillion, Patty (David) Veverka of Sarasota, Florida and Joanne (Jerry) Collins of Tiffin; son, John A. (Donna) Bakewell of Milan; stepchildren, Douglas E. George of Cincinnati, Kimberly D. Boyd of Nebraska and Debra L. Richardson of Sandusky; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Rorden of Huron; and brother, William (Elizabeth) Bakewell of Maryland.

Friends will be received in the GROFF FUNERAL HOME, 1607 East Perkins Avenue, Sandusky, on Thursday, March 8, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The body will lay in state from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. on Friday, at the Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene, 4013 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, with Pastor David Flack officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at Scott Cemetery, Huron.
