Son of Samuel L. Abbot Jr. (1792-1843) and Matilda Campbell (1797-1879).
Grandson of Samuel L. Abbot Sr. (1763-1856) and 1st wife Naomi Whiting (1765-1805). Some family trees say Samuel Lloyd Abbot and others say Samuel Leonard Abbot.

Distant cousin of Gen. Julian Whiting of Mobile.
29 Oct 1851: He married at Roxbury, Mass. Anna Lewis Blake who died at Boston in 1853 leaving a son J.L. Abbot Jr., one-year of age.
22 Jun 1856: He married his second wife Mrs. Carolina Barney, Mobile, Alabama. She was an aunt of Alva Vanderbilt.
His first wife was a great-granddaughter of Samuel Parkman (1751-1824), a noted citizen and benefactor of Boston who commissioned works of art from Gilbert Stuart, John Trumbull, Paul Revere and other great artists of the day. Gilbert Stuart painted portraits of the Parkmans as well as multiple portraits of George Washington, as did Trumbull. Parkman also commissioned a bronze church bell from Paul Revere. Mrs. Abbot's grand-uncle George Parkman (1790-1849) was controller of the $5 million Parkman fortune, gave the land for Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. In 1849 he was murdered by a Harvard Medical School physician who dismembered his body. Lurid, gruesome details of the horrific murder rocked Boston society and so disturbed Mrs. Parkman that she never again left her home on Beacon Hill; nor did her children ever married (Blood & Ivy: The 1849 Murder that Scandalized Harvard by Paul Collins).
