Temple was the first of nine children born to Hiram Bartlett, a laborer, and his wife Euphemia (Holmes).

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 8, 1861 and served aboard the receiving ship U.S.S. Ohio and later in the Mississippi gunboat flotilla. He was mustered out of the service on an unknown date.

Temple enlisted as a Private in Co. H of the 58th Massachusetts Infantry on March 28, 1864. He was wounded on July 30, 1864 during the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA, suffering a fractured right forearm when struck by a minie ball. He was hospitalized from that point until discharged for disability at Dale General Hospital in Worcester on Feb. 9, 1865.

Temple resided in Plymouth after his military service and worked primarily as a farm laborer. He was a member of the Collingwood G.A.R. Post 76 in Plymouth.

He married Nancy Emma Bartlett, the 19-year-old daughter of Thomas M. and Sarah Ann (Doten), Jr., at Plymouth on Feb. 21, 1868. Temple and Nancy were parents to Anna. P, born 1869; Euphemia, born 1871; Lydia W., born 1873; Lester, born 1875; Bernice A., born 1884; and Annie C., born 1887.
