Obituary from The Independent Record:

Beatrice "Bea" VanDiest, 72, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2001.

Bea (Gross) VanDiest was born on Aug. 18, 1929, in New Rockford, N.D. She moved to Rugby, N.D., in 1942, and graduated from Rugby High School in 1947. Bea moved to Montana in 1948.

On Feb. 10, 1950, she married August "Augie" VanDiest and one child, a son Mike, was born to this union.

Bea spent the majority of her life in service to others as one of the most beloved waitresses that Helena has known. She retired from the 4B's Cafe in 1993, and enjoyed retirement but missed the people.

In 1996, Bea went to work at Woodpeckers and worked there until 1998, when she began her battle with cancer. She made many friends and touched a tremendous number of lives through her work as a waitress.

Bea is survived by her best friend and husband Augie VanDiest; her beloved son and daughter-in-law Mike and Heidi VanDiest; and her two precious grandsons, and the loves of her life, Shane and Clay VanDiest of Helena.

Prior to her death, Bea wrote, "I will miss all of you so much, but remember, I will always love you very much. You made my life so blessed and complete. I will always be with you."

Additional survivors include Bea's sisters, Katherine and her husband Merlin House, Lillian and her husband Fred Massine, Margie and her husband Keith Wright; brother, Peter and his wife Monica Gross; many nieces, nephews, cousins; as well as extended family Mr. and Mrs. Greg Gray and Steve, Brian, Jennie, Haley and Aimee Gray.

A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church. The funeral Mass will take place Friday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., at the church, with interment to follow at St. Ann's Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church or St. Ann's Cemetery.
