State of Virginia, to wit. On this thirteenth day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred & thirty-seven, personally appeared before me a justice of the peace,

Nancy Nelson formerly Nancy Carter, a resident of the county of Mecklenburg & State of Virginia, aged seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, passed July 4 1836. th

That she is the widow of Major John Nelson, who entered the army of the Revolution, a Captain of Cavalry, in Blands regiment, in the month of June seventeen hundred seventy six, that in the year seventeen hundred & seventy nine, he was appointed Major Commandant of a Corps of Cavalry, in the State Cavalry of the Virginia Line – that he continued in command of said corps, til the latter part of the year seventeen hundred & eighty two – that he continued as a supernumerary til the treaty of peace & in eighteen hundred thirty two, that his Executor

received from the government of the United States, his half pay for life, which terminated the eighteenth of February eighteen hundred & twenty seven.

She further declares, that she was married to the said Major John Nelson, on the twenty fifth day of July in the year seventeen hundred & eighty one, that her husband, the aforesaid Major John Nelson died on the eighteenth day of February, in the year eighteen hundred & twenty seven & that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. [On 5 Feb 1839 John Nelson, son and Executor of John Nelson deceased, swore to the authenticity of a family record transcribed as follows:]

John Nelson & Ann Carter were married the 25 July in the year 1781 in the Chapel of Wm. & th Mary College.

Thos. Mauduit Nelson was born the 27 Sept’r 1782 th

John Nelson was born the 31 March 1784

st Lucy Nelson was born the 11 Sept’r 1785

Robert Nelson was born the 30 Jan’y 1787 th Hugh Nelson was born the 22 Nov’r. 1788

Nancy Carter Nelson was born the 27 Sept’r 1790

th William Nelson was born the 31 July 1792 and his daughter Anna Matilda Nelson was born the st 15 November 1817

th Mary Nelson was born the 16 March 1794 & died the 20 April 1795. The Lord’s will be done.

th th Nath’l Nelson was born April the 9 1796 at Oak Hill

th Caroline Matilda was born December 24 1798 at do. th 5 of April 1802

The Lord took unto himself my dear little Nat. “He can create & he destroy.”

th Sarah Nelson was born 14 August 1802 and on the 25 November following was taken from th th this transitory life to be made a little Angel 18 of February 1827–

Hugh Nelson departed this life. th 24 of May 1831

Nancy C. Kernan wife of E. Kernan departed this life. th

NOTE: In Richmond VA on 21 Mar 1838 Robert Greenhow, 77, deposed that “Secretary Nelson of York had two sons Thomas & John,” and that the older son married Sally Carey, eldest daughter of Wilson Miles Carey, and that she died shortly after giving birth to a son named Carey Nelson. He also deposed that the second son was Major John Nelson
