According to age listed at death, Karen would have been born about 1845. according to age at marriage she would have been born about 1833. Per Old Westbrook Church Record, Highwater twp, Cottonwood County MN, Karen was born in Norway.

Info received about Svend Loing/Loeng when homesteading in Highwater twp, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. When Svend and Karen homesteaded, the nearest town was New Ulm close to 50 miles away.

Recently, we (researchers of Cottonwood County, MN) received the list of individuals buried in Bang Hill Cemetery between 1871-1878 and decided to see what we could find out about the people buried there. One of the individuals was Kari Sveinsen, age 30, wife of Svein Sweinsen Loing, died March 13, 1875, buried 18 April 1875. The other was the daughter Josephine Matilda Sweinsen Loeng, age 9 1/2 months. She is in the Baptism records of Old Westbrook Lutheran Church as being born 13 December 1874, baptized 17 Jan 1875 and died 11 Sept 1875, buried Oct 3, 1875, per church records. The cemetery is about a mile N.E. of the Loeng farm. Although the Loeng’s left in 1876 (The “Chronicles of Highwater Township” states that “Sven Loeng and children moved in the year 1876.”), the farm was still owned by the son Herman Sweinsen Loing in 1895. The farm is 6 miles north of Storden, Minnesota.

1) The names and birth dates of the surviving two children are the same in the Old Westbrook Church records as in their obituaries.
2) Karen was a name that was sometimes spelled Kari
3) When Svend homesteaded, the nearest town was New Ulm close to 50 miles away

4) The Old Westbrook Church records give the place of baptism for Herman and Lena as the Old East Paint Creek Church.

The following is information gathered before it was discovered that Karen died in 1875, Cottonwood County MN, USA.
Svend Married Karen Martina Johnsdatter per church record Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Waterville, Alamakee Co. Iowa.
Svend Svenson Loing was married on Sept 1, 1861 to Martine (Karen Mathea) Johnsdatter . Svend age 37, Martine was 28 ½ years. Per old East Paint Creek Church records.
Svend and Martine had 2 children Lena and Herman.
Carl Dehli and Ingeborg Dehli raised Herman and Lena Loeng until they were old enough to work out after their mother died and their father Svend died at the state hospital at Independence, Iowa. Ingeborg Dehli was a sister to Karen Mathea Johnsdatter Loeng.
Svend was in Waterville, IA, Alamakee Co. in 1858
Svend sold land in Alamakee Co, IA Oct 21, 1869 to Colbornson Stengrin Book U pg 87, E ½ SE Sec 33, twnship 98, range 4, 80 acres.
Svend Loeng was baptism sponsor for Ben Bottolfsen July 5, 1858 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Waterville, Alamakee Co. IA. Ben was the son of Martin and Mari (Svendsdatter Loeng) Bottolfsen.

Svend Loeng and his wife Karen Mathea left Allamakee county Iowa and homesteaded at New Ulm (correction Westbrook,) Cottonwood County, Minnesota abt 1869. The grasshoppers ate them out and they lost everything and they (now known only father Svend, Lena and Herman) took their few belongings, put them in a covered wagon pulled by oxen and herding 3 cows, left New Ulm (Westbrook) and headed for Harpers Ferry, Iowa with the 2 children, Lena and Herman. NOTE: Svend Loeng (Svendsen) went a little crazy after the grasshoppers came and ate him out, and his wife and baby daughter died. The grasshoppers even ate the rail fences. When they got to Harpers Ferry (Lansing?) they stayed with Carl and Ingeborg Dehli. The father Svend Loeng had mental problems because of his financial difficulties etc, he went or was sent to the Mental Health Hospital in Independence Iowa about January 1880.
Information from the hospital:
Sven Svenson died March 27, 1880 at the Mental Health Institute. He was the 108th person to pass away. He came from Allamakee County. Records indicate that he was married or thought he was still married. He died from Abscess of liver.
Svend was only there for 2 months, before he passed away. Grave marker #113 in State Hospital Cemetery.
It is now known that Svend died after his wife. (see Note above for clarification on all)
