Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a Corporal in Company I, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on Aug. 24, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on September 1, 1861, he re-enlisted on December 22, 1863. When the 5th New Jersey's original enlistment expired in September 1864, he was transferred to Company G of the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He had been reduced in rank due to the move, but was promoted to Corporal on November 1, 1864. He served through the end of the conflict, and was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865.
