Evert Emery Baker, 85, died March 11, 2007, at Falls Community Hospital in Marlin following a short illness. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Marlin, under the direction of McNeil's Mustang Funeral Service in Mustang, Okla. He was born in Minco, Okla., on March 8, 1922, to Ralph Emery Baker and Iona Evelyn (Davis) Baker. After graduating from Union City High School, he served as a Navy medical corpsman in the Pacific during World War II. He married Ermal Stewart on May 23, 1946, in Yukon, Okla., and farmed in that area for many years. He and his wife operated Baker's Dairy until 1960 when they and their children moved to Dallas. From 1960 to 1982, he worked as a USDA meat and poultry inspector in the central Texas area including Waco, Marlin, and Bryan. After retiring from the USDA, Evert operated a lawn mower and tiller repair service in Marlin for many years. In 1994, he and his wife bought a farm near Lott and built a house there. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Oliver of Oklahoma City, Okla. He is survived by his wife, Ermal of Lott; son, Larry Baker of Lott; son, Terry Baker of Calbert; daughter, Sherri Bryant and husband, Alan of Cedar Creek; grandchildren, David Emery Bryant and Mary Beth Bryant, both of Cedar Creek; brother, Ervy Baker and wife, Gloria of Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
