Laurel Louise (Maloy) Engle passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the age of 73.

She was born on December 8, 1943, in Oxnard, California, to Hugh Marvin Maloy and Marjorie Geneva (Ward) Maloy. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Anacapa Junior High in Ventura, and she graduated from Ventura High School in 1961. She obtained her associate’s degree, majoring in business, from Ventura College in 1963.

Laurel met Roger Engle, her friend Lois Engle’s brother, and they were married on June 15, 1963, at the First Baptist Church in Ventura. Their wedding was officiated by her soon-to-be father-in-law, Rev. Dr. Alfred M. Engle. Roger and Laurel were married for 54 years. They purchased their home of 49 years in Anaheim, California, in 1968.

Laurel worked in the Ventura County Courthouse Probation Department and Map Room, and she worked as a secretary at White Sands Missile Range, the MAR site, while she and Roger lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She worked to put Roger through school at New Mexico State University. She said, “My boss had 32 men who worked with us in the MAR Site. It was a huge concrete dome because we were on the range where missiles could land. We had to show our badge and walk down two flights of stairs and then up two flights to get to the ground.”

Laurel was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Anaheim, now City Church, where Rev. Engle was pastor. She played the piano there for many years, sang in the choir, and assisted with Vacation Bible School. More recently, she played the chimes with Partners in Chime through the Anaheim Senior Center. She also attended many Bible studies through the church.

Laurel had so many interests that we would be hard-pressed to mention them all. She loved to get together with family and friends; hosting and hospitality were her forte. She played the piano and enjoyed it so much that Roger bought a piano for her shortly after their marriage so that she wouldn't have to go without being able to play. She used to help her father compose music for his barbershop quartet and accompanied the church children's choir, After the Rain, for many years, played for the adult choir for even longer, and also played preludes and postludes and accompanied the congregation during hymns.

She also enjoyed genealogy, dolls, crafting (even making Christmas ornaments from cloth and from bread dough), sewing (including making tons of clothes for her daughters), gardening, cooking (farmer's apple pie, anyone?), snow-skiing, camping with the Rossers and the Moores, photography, travel, and visits to Disneyland. Most recently she attended plays, musicals, and orchestral events, regaling her family and friends with entertaining reviews.

Finally, we should mention that Laurel loved decorating for holidays. But her favorite was Christmas! She went all out with swags of green garlands, each sporting a different type of ornament: angels, Santas, Americana, and rocking horses. Her Christmas trees were always full of antique glass ornaments, many of which were family heirlooms. She would also place all the Christmas cards the family received in the slats of the folding doors leading to the family room.

Laurel is survived by her husband, Roger; her daughters, Debora (husband Garth) Hoffmann and Jennifer (husband Joe) Abdo; her brothers, William "Bill" (wife Diane) Maloy and Hugh Marvin "Pat" (wife Harriet) Maloy Jr.; two grandchildren, Elena Hoffmann and Larisa Hoffmann; and great-granddaughter, Sofia Prado; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

Laurel was a truly beautiful person who expressed a great love for Christ and for her family. She will be greatly missed!

A celebration of Laurel's life was held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at her home, with numerous loved ones in attendance.

Private inurnment will be in Whittier, California, at Rose Hills Memorial Park's Primrose Lawn near her parents.
