Alfred married Nancy Amanda Smith in Buncombe County on October 6, 1886. Alfred was the son of Joseph S. and Elizabeth Surrett Chunn. An article about his death appeared in a newspaper called the Asheville Daily Citizen. It stated that he and several others had been attending a prayer meeting at the Acton Methodist Church. On the way home, the group decided to cross a railroad trestle to avoid walking in the muddy road. When he was about halfway across the trestle, witnesses saw him fall onto rocks below. He had been sick the day before, so it was not known whether he stumbled or suffered from apoplexy. The newspaper stated he was buried in Acton cemetery on February 2, 1894. His widow married Elihu H. Britt in 1902, appearing on the marriage record as Amanda Chunn.
