Robert Egeberg Magnusson of Williamsburg died on September 29, 2017 at the age of 83 surrounded by his family and his priest. He was born on April 19, 1934, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, to Cyrus and Mabel Magnusson. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother Charles Magnusson.

Bob received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and an M.A. in International Relations from San Francisco State University. Bob proudly served in the United States Air Force for 30 years. He was always a Fighter Pilot and a Command Pilot. His last assignment was Langley AFB where he was Vice Commander of the 1st Air Force. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, several Defense Meritorious Service medals, numerous awards of the Air Medal, various other awards and commendations to include the prestigious Irving Award.

His military career took Bob and his family to many places. They especially enjoyed their years spent in Japan and Okinawa. After 30 years in the U.S. Air Force and moving to Williamsburg, he worked many years with a defense contractor. Bob was active in his new community as past president of James City Rotary Club, past president of Kingsmill Yacht Club, Kingsmill Golf Club, Crown Colony and Virginia Symphony. He treasured his many friendships. He was a very active member of Bruton Parish Church and was on many committees including the Vestry.

He is survived by Patti, his wife of 60 years; two children, William Magnusson, Kristine Magnusson (Michael Jessee); two grandchildren, Kari and Robert; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Magnusson and Paul Magnusson.

The family thanks the Doctors and staff at Williamsburg Sentara Hospital and especially Doctor Parikh for the excellent care he gave him. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2017, 2:00 pm, at Bruton Parish Church. Interment will be in the Bruton Parish Cemetery with Military Honors. A reception will follow the service at the Parish House. Arrangements by Nelsen Funeral Home.
