GREENSBORO Mrs. Dorothy J. Meeks, 96, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2017, at Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 West Market Street with Rev. Tom Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Midway Cemetery on Rankin Mill Road. Dorothy was born March 2, 1921, in Orange County, NC, daughter of the late Robert Henry Wellons and Eunice Donnell Jones. She graduated from Greensboro High School, where she played basketball, and completed a one-year commercial course at Women's College. She was huge NC State sports fan. Until she was 90 years old, she worked as the office manager of Pomona Pipe Company. Dorothy was an avid bowler, very active at her church where she was in charge of the altar flowers for Sunday, mistress of ceremonies for the Mother/Daughter Banquet, a Sunday School teacher and circle member. She enjoyed bus tours as far west as Branson, MO and traveled most of the eastern coast and some of the Midwest. She loved the Amish country in Lancaster, PA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Meeks was preceded in death by her husband, John William Meeks; son, John William Meeks, Jr.; sister, Eunice J. Pitchford and brother, R.H.W. Jones, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Doris J. Yeattes of Greensboro, nieces and nephews, Marian (Johnny) Jordan, Charles (Marian) Pitchford, Jeff (Karen) Yeattes, Dorn Yeattes, Annette (James) Green, R.H.W., III, David Jones, Phillip (Susan) Jones, and Janet (Ron) Benedict. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Thursday at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel, 515 North Elm Street, Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
