British Neurologist. He is probably best remembered for his two-volume "Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System" (1886 - 1888) which is still being used as a reference today. His father died when he was eleven years old and he went to live with relatives in Oxford, England. He was introduced to a local doctor and suggested that he might become a medical apprentice, which he unwillingly agreed, and spent the next three years apprenticing under him. He then attended the University of London and graduated with a medical degree in 1863. He practiced at the National Hospital for the Paralyzed and Epileptics, Queen Square, London (now the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) from 1870 until 1910. A master of diagnosis, his clinical teaching at Queen Square earned him an international reputation. and was appointed Professor of Clinical Medicine at University College London in 1887. He was knighted for his work in 1897 and died from pneumonia at the age of 70.
