Barbara J. Winkel, 78 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 11:15 am Thursday December 10, 2015 at her home. She was born May 6, 1937 in Mankato, Kansas, a daughter of Ross and V. Gayl Powell Hancock. On August 26, 1955, she married W. Dean Winkel in Mankato, Kansas.

She was a homemaker and rural mail carrier. She was a member of the Fort Madison United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, flower gardening, and traveling. Her family was the most important part of her life, and she loved to spend time with them.

She is survived by her husband W. Dean Winkel, of Fort Madison. Iowa; one son, Bradley Dean (Lannette) Winkel of Fort Madison, Iowa; three daughters: Carla Jo (Terry) Davis of Fort Madison, Iowa, Julia Ann (Robert) Stauffer of Fairfax, Iowa, and Karen Jean (Darren) Brandenburg of Marion, Iowa; three brothers: Gary Hancock of Wilsonville, Oregon, Jerry Hancock of Hastings, Nebraska and Rod Hancock of Salina, Kansas; one sister, Linda Chilcotte of Ozawke, Kansas; 10 grandchildren: Robert Chesnut IV, Amy Stauffer, Heather Agcaoili, Terry Davis II, Andrea Peyton, Grant Winkel, LaShae Robbins, Trent Brandenburg, Paige Brandenburg, and Zack Winkel; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 am Monday, December 14, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services, Fort Madison, Iowa. Funeral services will follow and begin at 11:00 am Monday, December 14, 2015 at the funeral home, with Reverend Lanette Van officiating. Following the services, her body will be cremated. A memorial has been established for the Fort Madison United Methodist Church or Hope Haven, contributions may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison.
