Extract from a letter written by Countess St Germans (Jemima Eliot) to her son, dated 31 Jul 1854:
"I suppose you saw that your old friend Sarah Fitz Clarence is become a widow. The Fitzclarence family were very angry that people said she was not happy and they drew up papers which they made Lord and Lady Henry and Louisa sign saying there was no truth in his having personally ill used her and they sent this about with a letter from Sarah herself testifying to her affection for her husband. He did not positively ill use her indeed. I believe he was very fond of her but he shut her up completely and I do not believe she was happy. Sarah is with her family at Hampton Court. He left her everything."
