Harvey H. Strokes, Sr 1909 - 2000

Harvey H. Strokes, Sr., 90, of Sioux City died Friday, January 28, 2000, at a Sioux City nursing home after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Services will be at 10 A.M. Tuesday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Penner of Glendale Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating at the funeral home.

Mr. Stokes was born April 20, 1909, in Washta, Iowa, the son of Joseph Henry and Esther Ann (Church) Stokes. As a small boy, he moved to South Dakota with his family. The family returned to Washta in 1914. He came to Sioux City in 1925.

He married Doris E. Morris on February 1, 1931 in Sioux City. She died June 21, 1984 in Sioux City.

On July 17, 1987 in South Sioux City he married Della (Breisch) Hansen.

He worked at Cudahy Packing as a young man. He was a self-employed contractor and house mover. He also worked as a sanitation engineer for the city of Sioux City.

He was a member of Glendale Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon, Trustee and Lay Minister.

He served in the Iowa National Guard.

He was a member of Ben Hur Lodge and the Gideon’s.

Survivors include his wife, Della, of South Sioux City; four daughters; Eleanor Nielsen of South Sioux City, Ruth and her husband, Dean Snyder, of Sioux City, Gladys and her husband, Marvin Jensen of Sioux City and Doris Stokes of Eden Prairie, Minn.; three sons and their wives; Harvey Jr. and Kelly of Sioux City, Donald and Mary of Sioux City and Walter and Connie of Tuttle, Oklahoma; a sister, Evangeline Fallon of Sioux City and a brother and his wife, Irl and Isabelle Stokes of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Switzer, four brothers, Paul and Morris Gendreau, Floyd Stokes and Samuel Cook, three sisters, Olive and Laura May Stokes and Mary Esther “Babe” Hennigan and two granddaughters; Christine E. and Kathleen L. Stokes.

Pallbearers will be Jerry and Brad Nielsen, Russell Snyder, Dean Snyder Jr., Dan and Dennis Jensen and Tod and Jin Stokes.
