Leroy Frank Jones was the eldest child born to Guy Woods Jones and Mabel Iona Mitts. He was born at home during a snow storm. His brothers are Stanley, Ronald, Robert, and sister Madelyn.

During his high school years he was very athletic. He participated in football, basketball and track. He lettered in track in his freshman year and continued to letter the rest of his high school years. Leroy belonged to the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout Badge.

He was drafted during his junior year and entered into service for his country in August of 1944. Weed high school presented him his diploma in June of 1945 in which his Grandmother Eva Mitts accepted on his behalf.

He went to Ft Knox, Kentucky for basic training to be trained in tanks and half track vehicles. He was part of the 778th Tank Battalion in the European Theater. He spent 18 months in Europe. His main job in the service was maintaining the the guns on the tanks. After the war while still in Europe he would drive the half tracks. He met his first wife Maria in Germany where they were married. They had three children. His son William Frank passed away in 1991. He has two daughters Christina May and Kathrene Maria.

Leroy was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. When he was a young man, he built a fly fishing rod out of bamboo. He would also modify military rifles into hunting rifles. He also reloaded his own ammunition. He also liked to go rock hunting and would bring many different rocks home. Leroy was a great outdoorsman where he would teach his grandchildren about the outdoors.

Leroy was instrumental in breaking ground in getting the Assembly of God Church in Cottonwood, California started. He was also one of the first teachers for the Good News Rescue Mission in Redding, California. He was a strong supporter of the Wounded Veteran of America.
