Born in Newburgh, Orange County, New York, Fred was the son of Major William W. & Marietta Gulick Trask. He was named for his maternal grandfather, Frederick Gulick.

In 1894 he traveled to San Antonio, Texas with his father, where he was enrolled at the just-established Peacock Military Academy which his father had helped to establish. By 1900 he was living in Ardmore, Oklahoma along with his father, his brother Will C. Trask and his sister Henrietta "Nettie" Trask. His mother remained in Newburgh, New York until her death in 1903.

Fred moved to Dallas Texas in about 1906 where he met and married Mary in about 1909. He worked as a life insurance agent throughout his adult life.
