Lieutenant Colonel, C.S.A. Before the war, Meriwether was chief engineer of river levees in western Tennessee. He entered Confederate service in October 1861 & served on the staff of General Sterling Price in northern Mississippi & then on the staff of General John Pemberton as chief engineer & supervised the construction of several of the forts in Vicksburg. After Vicksburg's fall, he was assigned to the task of maintaining the railroads in the deep south. In 1864 Meriwether joined the staff of General Joseph E. Johnston in Georgia & then the staff of General Richard Taylor. He became a business associate of former cavalryman Nathan Bedford Forrest & was at his bedside to record the famous general's last command on October 29, 1877: "Call my wife." Meriwether returned to St. Louis where he practiced law until his death.
