Susanne Akers, aged 88, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2017 at her home in Boise Idaho.
Susanne was born in Stuttgart, Germany on March 13, 1929 to Wilhelm and Dorothea Brecht. After high school and two years of business school, Susanne was hired by the U.S. 7th Army in Stuttgart as a translator and secretary. There, she met her future husband, Major Walter W. Akers. They married in Stuttgart on June 27, 1955. Their first assignment together was in Ft. Eustis, Virginia where their only child, Stephanie, was born.
Susanne loved life as an army wife and enjoyed their associated travels. Highlights included Taiwan, Northern Virginia, Germany and Susanne and Walt's favorite, SHAPE, Belgium. In 1974, Walt and Sue retired to Boise Idaho. While this was not Susanne's first choice, she grew to love Idaho and had many adventures with Walt. She was often his fishing boat driver, golfing buddy, business partner, and motorhome companion.
Susanne and Walt enjoyed 31 years in their home in Indian Lakes Subdivision, where the desert out their back door provided a much-loved view of the mountains and sage brush. They had many friends and enjoyed their association with the Gown Field Officers Club. Family was frequently present in their home. Susanne was a talented cook who loved her family. Grandma Susie is fondly remembered by her grandchildren for many spirited card games. Susanne also had a caring relationship with her stepsons and their families, who visited often.
Widowed in 2006, Susanne moved to Willowbrook Senior Community where she acquired new friends and rekindled her bridge game. In 2015 she decided to stop cooking and move into an apartment at Morningstar Independent Living. She moved to the Assisted Living side at Morningstar in September 2017. She stayed long enough to see her grandson get married that month and have a wonderful visit with family. Many thanks to all of her St. Luke's doctors, Morningstar staff, Compassus Home Health and Keystone Hospice for their excellent care.
Susanne was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Dorothea Brecht, her husband of 50 years Walter W Akers and her sister Gertrud Fuchs. She is survived by her daughter Stephanie Larrondo (favorite son-in-law Scott), stepsons Thomas Eversole (Austine), Terrell Swan (Carmel), grandchildren Felicia Eversole Bachman (Dave), Megan Larrondo (Tim Rowe), Samuel Larrondo (Jenna), great grandchildren Alex, Kaiti and Kelsey Bachman, Caitlin and Claire Rowe and her niece and nephew and their families in Germany.
Susanne will be greatly missed. Graveside services will be at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday October 17th at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service and celebration of life at 11:00 am at Summers Funeral Home, 3629 Ustick Rd, Meridian Idaho.
