Elizabeth Hicks was born about 1816. She had five sons and four daughters with Martin Luther Dalton between 1833 and 1854. She died after 1880 in Hillsville, Carroll County, VA. It was said by her Grandaughter Malesie Hicks Edwards that Elizabeth Hicks and her parents and brother Riley and sister Delilah were traveling by ship from England and the family became sick. The parents died on the voyage. She was taken in by the Dalton family and their son, Martin fell in love with her. They married (Marriage Contract 1832
In the U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 Name: Elizabeth Hicks Gender: Female Birth Year: 1816 Spouse Name: Martin Dalton Spouse Birth Place: VA) He was force by his parents to marry Kaziah Hill for political reasons. He continued to be with Elizabeth Hicks and established a house for her and a separate household nearby for Keziah. Two of Elizabeth Hicks and Martin Dalton's sons were killed in the civil war. One at Harrisburg and the other at Appomatox just before the end of the war. A book was written about her.Elizabeth lived on Little Reed Island Creek between Hillsville and Coon Ridge (now called Dalton Hill) on land adjacent to Martin and Keziah Dalton. Between 1833 and 1857 she produced 10 children, most of whom historians credit to Martin Luther Dalton although they never married.
