Hitchcock graduated from the University of Nashville and from Yale before moving to St. Louis where he was admitted to the bar in 1851. During his long and distinguished career he established the law school of Washington University. His military service began in 1864 when he was appointed to the staff of General William T. Sherman as a legal advisor. The letters and diaries that Hitchcock wrote between November 1864 and May 1865 were compiled in book form and published after his death as Marching With Sherman. They have become one of the most important firsthand accounts of Sherman's march to the sea.
