Henry is the son of Calvin Vance and Susannah Fenner. He is a brother to Temperance, Charles, Orville and Rosa Vance. His WWI draft card gives his year of birth as 1884. It indicates he was a travelling expert for the International Harvester Company. In 1910 he had worked as a machinist and in 1920 as a mechanical engineer.
Henry married Eva May Hyatt on 12 Mar 1931. She had married Bert Benjamin Bentley in 1925, had a daughter with him in 1928 and he had died suddenly in 1928. By 1940 Eva and Henry had separated and he listed himself as widowed as in the 1940 census.

He died of a cerebral hemorrhage after a 17 day stay.
