William Alexander was the eldest son of John Alexander yeoman and his wife Sarah (nee Stovey) and was baptised on the 18th January 1746 at St Swithin's Church in Compton Bassett.

William Alexander of St Peters in Shaftsbury married Sarah Foot on the 14th November 1768 at Berwick St John in Wiltshire where she resided.

The year before his marriage William had opened a grocers shop in the Corn Market in Shaftesbury. He was a grocer in the Corn Market until 23 Aug 1784 when he ceases to trade in Shaftesbury and the business is taken over by a James Forward. He was then to become a miller at Fontmell Magna until his death on the 31st July 1788 when he was buried in St Andrews churchyard on August 4th leaving Sarah a widow until her death in 1800.

William and Sarah had at least five girls and two boys:-
