GUEYDAN '97 Service will be at 10 a.m. today, June 2, at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Gueydan for Leo P. Abshire, 71, who died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at his residence. Interment will be in Gueydan Cemetery, with full military rites. The Rev. Mitchell Guidry will conduct the service.
Mr. Abshire was a native of Kaplan and resident of Gueydan. He was a Cajun fiddle player,
traveling around the world twice to perform for the Queen of England, Princess Di and President Clinton. He played at Carnagie Hall and at the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He served in the Army in the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Honor Guard for the VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Zula Foster Abshire of Gueydan; two sons, Leo Abshire Jr. and wife Jeanette of Moss Bluff, and Kevin Abshire and wife Loma of Holly Beach; five daughters, Patricia Menzel of Holly Beach, Ramona Heasty of Covington, Anita Abshire of Holly Beach, Brenda Hebert and husband Paul Gerald of Kaplan, and Schalacey Sonnier of Dallas; one sister, Emma Johnson of Alvin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clomaire Abshire and Oza LeBlanc; former wife, Rose Broussard; two sons, Jeremy and Keith Abshire; and three grandchildren, Ashly Frederick, Chris Hebert and Chad Hebert.
Visitation was Wednesday, with rosary by the Ladies Auxiliary in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Blood Center.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Matthews and Son Funeral Home of Gueydan, (337) 536-9377.
