Emma Clay, wife of Henry "Hank" Clay, mother of Sarah {Saydie}, and Hattie Clay Hill, assisted her husband in his Blacksmith Shop and met the "Dalton Gang" and cared for their horses the day before the failed attempted raid on 2 Coffeyville banks. Daughters Saydie and Hattie were given rides on the Dalton horses. Saydie posted a comment to a Bartlesville historian that "Hattie" did not like the men. Emma declared her birthdate as 5 May 1863 on her U.S. Passport application in 1920 for a trip to Cuba at the U.S. Customs office in Kissimee Florida. A photo of Emma standing on the main street of frontier Bartlesville near a rifle that is stuck upright in the mud can be seen in various locations around the city as it was a popular representation of the town.
