Gregorio Abad

Gregorio Nazareno Abad died peacefully at Halifax Health Hospice in Port Orange, FL on 17 October 2017 at the age of 87.

Gregorio (Greg) is survived by his wife, Gloria of 61 years and six children, Maria Guia Miller (Seattle, WA), Maria Grace Pedersen, ARNP (Port Orange, FL), Gregorio Abad, MD (Dublin, GA), Maria Gloria Aloi (Winston-Salem, NC), Glenn Abad (Mount Vernon, IN), and Maria Gretel Abad Ostrowski (Daytona Beach, FL). He is preceded in death by his daughter, Germelina Anne Harney (South Daytona, FL).

Gregorio was a very proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Nikki Pedersen, Erik Miller, Sean Pedersen, Joey Aloi, Kristin Aloi, Brandon Abad, Andrew Abad, Danielle Pedersen, Caty Miller, Gabriel Savage, and Angelina Abad.

Gregorio was born on October 26, 1929 in Naic, Cavite, Philippines. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering. He earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines in 1967. In 1975, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Marine Sciences from North Carolina State University. He retired from the Philippine Navy as a Captain. During his naval career, he traversed the oceans along with the Straits of Magellan, after which he practiced as a Marine Engineer in the United States. In retirement, he was an avid card player in bridge, pinochle, and poker and a devoted parishioner of the Catholic Church of the Epiphany.

Visitation hours are scheduled from 4 to 6 PM, October 20, at Lohman Funeral Home of Port Orange. The funeral mass is scheduled for 11 AM, October 21, at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, also in Port Orange, and to be officiated by Father Chris Hoffman, followed by the graveside ceremony at the Woodlawn Cemetery. A reception will be held at a location to be announced later following the graveside ceremony. Family and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate Greg’s life.
