He graduated from Springfield High School and received his college and legal education at the University of Michigan. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1929.
Except for a short time in the attorney general's and the state's attorney's offices, he was engaged in private practice in Springfield. He was a member of the law firm of Ensel, Jones, Blanchard and LaBarre. Throughout his career, he did extensive legislative work.
He served in World War II for four years and left the service in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1948 he was appointed judge advocate general of the Illinois National Guard with the rank of colonel. He retired with the rank of brigadier general.
He was past president of the Sangamon County Bar Association and member of the Chicago, American and Illinois State Bar Associations, the Sangamo Club, Masonic Lodges, where he was a 32nd-degree Mason, and the Jesters.
He was past chairman and board member of the Sangamon County Chapter of the American Red Cross; past director of the United Community Fund, American Cancer Society, Visiting Nurse Association and Sangamon County TB Association; and past president of the Springfield Association of Commerce and Industry.
Surviving are his wife Eileen; one cousin. Graveside services in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
