Dolores Mae Cochran
February 12, 1921 - October 21, 2017

Dolores Cochran, formerly Stratton, was born in Selma, and graduated from Dinuba High School in 1939.
She attended Reedley College for one year, until her father discovered she was spending more time out of class than in, at which time he enrolled her at San Jose State University, and made arrangements for her to room at what was then the Catholic Women's Center across the street from SJSU.
Her father hoped that the attendance requirements and check-in protocols of the Center would encourage more serious academics, but that was not always the case. She still found ways to climb from her second story room to attend the local military dances.
Eventually she did get serious, and graduated with honors in 1943 with a BA in natural science and home economics.
From 1943 to 1944 she interned at Mills College, where she served as administrative dietician and taught institutional management.
In 1944 she worked at the Stanford Children's Hospital, as a dietitian preparing special meals for very sick children.

On December 12, 1944 Dolores married Jack Cochran, also from Dinuba. They lived at the San Diego Navy base and then settled in Dinuba after the war. Dolores taught food science and general science at the high school. Later she worked part-time at the new Alta Hospital as dietician and helped set up the kitchen. Soon after, she assisted Superintendent W. N. Davis establish and supervise food service for all Dinuba schools.

She would go back to college often, and thereby obtained educational credentials for general elementary, general secondary, general administrative, and pupil personnel services.

Dolores worked in Dinuba education for 31 years, teaching 4th, 7th, and 8th grade, substituting for several schools in Tulare County, serving as dean of girls at Dinuba High and principal of Wilson and Grand View schools. She also worked at the Tulare County Office of Education for 2 years.

Dolores was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dietetic Association, American Association of University Women, the American Personnel and Guidance Association. She served on the Commission on the Status of Women from 1977 - 78.
She was past president of the Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and past state board member of the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors.

Her volunteer activities included HICAP, Heart Association, March of Dimes, YWCA, American Field Service, Alta District Historical Society, Pioneer Club.

Dolores is predeceased by her parents, Ed and Mabel Stratton, her sisters Frances and Barbara, her husband Jack, and her daughter-in-law Vicki. She is survived by her son, Chris, and grandsons Andrew and Brian.
