Cerald "Don" Ericksen

December 1, 1930 – April 22, 2015

Our beloved brother, father, grandfather and friend, Cerald Don Ericksen, passed away on April 22, 2015, in Olympia, Washington, after a short battle with cancer.

Don was born on December 1, 1930, in Provo, Utah. He was raised on a ranch in Steinaker Draw near Vernal, Utah, and graduated from Unitah High School in 1949. He served his country honorably in the Navy during the Korean War conflict from 1949-53, stationed in various locales, including Iwa Jima and Okinawa, Japan. Don served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission from 1954-56. Don graduated from Utah State University in 1960 with a degree in Education.

While working for the National Forest Service in Vernal, Utah, he met Joyce Hacking, and they were married on September 18, 1956, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. After they were married, they moved to Logan, Utah, for Don to go to school. During summer break, they returned to Vernal where daughter, Donna Jean, was born. While living in Logan, Utah, three sons, Steven, Lanny and Michael, were born.

Don taught biology and special education for the Ogden school district for 16 years. He also drove trucks for Cantlaytanzola. Don enjoyed hunting, shooting, riding horses (especially his favorite horse, Skipper, who he had for over 25 years), riding motorcycles, and working on his parents' farm with his family.

In July 1975, Don and Joyce were divorced. In August of 1975, he married Donna Mae Darby, in Olympia, Washington, and joined her and her three boys, David, Daylan and D.J., on their farm in Olympia.

Don loved learning and spent his life teaching others. He taught middle and high school mathematics and biology for several years in Washington before retiring in the late 1980's. His love for gardening inspired him to develop weedless gardening, a technique that he would go on to teach and share with many people. Don had a special love for music and enjoyed being part of the Puget Sounders, a barbershop men's chorus in Olympia. His pioneer ancestors held a special place in his heart, and he could be found recounting the stories of their hardships and triumphs. Many if these ancestors were pioneers in the LDS church and hailed back to its earliest days.

Don was very active in the LDS faith and served in various capacities including gospel doctrine teacher, primary teacher, high priest group leader, and temple worker. Don is survived by his brother Boyd (Connie) Ericksen; children, Donna Jean Young (Michael), Steven (Denise), Lanny (Casandra), and Michael (Tina); stepchildren, David (Julie), Daylan (Luana), and D'Lane Joel (Renate); 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae; sister, Venla Jean (Larry) Thorne; parents, Cerald Alfred and Elva Mythilla (Kearl) Ericksen of Cache County, Utah; and grandson Bryan Darby.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 1116 Yew Avenue NE, Olympia, Washington, on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at 10:00 am. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Burial will be at Olympic Memorial Gardens in Tumwater, Washington.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate Don's life. Memorial contributions may be made to the LDS Missionary Fund at https://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/donations/lds-church/missionary-fund.html?cde1=807.

The family would like to thank Providence Sound Home Care & Hospice for their amazing support in his final months and all those who have provided flowers, donations, food and kindness.
