Calvin died of complications due to age. He was born to Ellena Warner Dunbar and Norman Deane Dunbar. Growing up in Los Angeles, CA, he graduated from Los Angeles HS, 1943. Cal served in United States Marine Corps, 1943 - 1946. After graduating from the Japanese Language School, Class 10, he was deployed to The Pacific Island Command, Guam, Investigation/Interrogation. He spent two years in daily interrogation and association with hundreds of Japanese prisoners of war. His cultural interest and proficiency formed some lifetime interests and friends among the Japanese, the material for his book about that episode of his life.

After discharge from active duty, Cal attended University of California, Berkeley, and was a brother of the California Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, graduating UCLA, 1952. He married Janice Horlick Romney, Salt Lake City, UT 6-54. They were the parents of two children. Moving to Montana with his family, 1961, he was a member of American Legion, Old Faithful Post; Montana Society of Mayflower Descendants; Sons of the American Revolution; Clan Dunbar; founding member of Federation of Fly Fishers; Trout Unlimited; Montana Trout Foundation; Founders Circle, Yellowstone Historic Center; Community Protestant Church, (PC:USA); WY Senior Center. Cal was a troop leader, Boy Scouts of America and an avid fly fisherman and skier. Cal worked tirelessly for incorporation 1966, the acquisition of the Yellowstone Airport and First Security Bank of West Yellowstone. He served on the West Yellowstone Town Council for 18 years. During that time he was instrumental to the acquisition of the first resort tax in MT, enabling the town to provide infrastructure and services for the community.

Cal was known as a "People-Person," interested in individuals, personalities, friends, traditions, and history of any kind. His gregarious enthusiasm and curiosity served him as the backdrop for his personal and professional life. He and Jean Cardon Young began an enduring business partnership at Food Roundup Supermarket, 1961, which remains active today. He behaved as a host there, his voice and demeanor friendly and inclusive, enriching his life with many friends. Dunbar Park is named for him in West Yellowstone. During his later years in Santa Cruz, CA, Cal was a member of Monterey Bay Detachment, 711, Marine Corps League, an association with many new friends whom he admired and enjoyed.

Surviving are his wife, Jan; children, Elizabeth Dustin ("Dusty") Dunbar (Steven Bolton), Fruita, CO, and Norman Romney ("Rom") Dunbar (Priscilla); grandsons Calvin Paul Dunbar and Paul Romney Dunbar, Santa Cruz, CA.; Sisters Bettie Lu Dunbar Thom, San Diego, CA, and Adalyn Dunbar Everett, Tucson, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066.

A celebration of Cal's life will be held in West Yellowstone, summer, 2018.
