Jan. 26, 1923 - Jun 17, 2014
Robert K. "Bob" Banks, 91, born 1/26/1923 in Clarksburg, WV.
Passed away 6/17/2014 while residing in Dowling Park, Florida
He is survived by his two sons. Bob is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina and France.
Bob was born at home in Clarksburg, WV. to his late parents Lester and Margaret Jefferies Banks. He was the youngest of eight children, of which only five survived into adulthood. His older sister, learned to fly at an early age, sparking his lifelong love of flying. At the onset of WWII, Bob, age 18, enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Cadet, quickly earning his wings. Because of his command of flying and easy going personality he quickly became a flight instructor; a position he maintained throughout most of his military career. He provided thirty-two years of service to our country, spanning WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired in 1974 with the rank of Lt. Col.
After retirement Robert resided in Merced, CA. with his wife until her passing in 1992. He had been bitten by the travel bug early on in retirement and after Betty's passing wanted to continue his journeys. In 1995 Bob and his youngest son, decided to travel America, visiting friends and relatives and exploring our amazing country. The journey lasted 20 years until his health began to decline. He spent the last year residing in a nursing home in Dowling Park.
Bob was a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the National Rifle Association. Bob was a thirty-second degree Mason with 50 plus years of service, and was an active member of the Shriners.
Robert will be cremated in Florida and interred at a later date in his family's plot at the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Merced, CA. alongside his late wife Betty Douglas Banks and his middle son; Robert K. Jr.
At his request, no memorial service will be held, but at a date to be determined, a gathering of remembrance will be observed by Bob's family and friends.
