The son of Zacharias & Catherine Hengst, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although Hellam Township is also reported, suggesting he was then living near the border of those adjacent townships. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Carlisle March 27, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Battery E, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery (43rd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his battery July 20, 1865.

He married Emma Harriet Kapp May 6, 1866, in York County and fathered Susan J. (b. 09/10/66), Curvin K. (b. 08/22/68), Clara M. (b. 01/25/70), and Estella A. (b. 08/15/71). In 1870, he was living with his family in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County. Per his pension documents, cause of his death was consumption, a disease that also killed four of his siblings.
