Margaret Mary “Maggie” (Kelly) Snyder, of Indian Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, died on Monday, February 4, 2013.
She was born in Chicago, the daughter of the late Anthony J. and Mary Louise (Duffy) Kelly. She was also the sister of the late Captain Donald F. Kelly, a U.S. Navy chaplain for 27 years.
Maggie graduated from St. Scholastica’s High School for Girls, Chicago, and attended St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana. She was a Red-Cross Hospital and Military Clinic volunteer for 46 years, both in the United States and in four different countries overseas where her husband was stationed. She loved the travel and the many friends she made while her husband was on active duty as a naval officer. She came to Newport when first married 63 years ago, and always loved it, and was glad to have returned to stay.
Maggie spent ten years as the Hospitality Chairman for the Naval War College Wives Club. She was a member of the Newport Garden Club for many years, and retired as an Affiliate. She was given the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award at Forest Farm Nursing Home for her monthly program showing colored slides from countries she had visited and lived in.
She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newport, and as a volunteer served as a Eucharistic Minister and Hospital Visitor. Her hobbies included reading both mysteries and biographies, which she shared with her friends of the Navy Wives Book Club, of which she was a member for nearly twenty years. The highlight of her year was always the Newport Music Festival, of which she and her husband were enthusiastic supporters, and of which she was once a Board member.

Maggie is survived by her husband of 63 years, Captain Frank M. Snyder, USN (Retired) of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and their daughter, Anne Louise Snyder, of Middletown, Rhode Island.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 4-6 p.m.
The funeral will be on Friday, February 8, 2013, with a Mass of Christian burial and Celebration of Life, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport at 9 a.m. Burial will be at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown.
